Can you install flooring over existing floors?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. Rigid-core LVP and floating engineered hardwood can install over existing hard surfaces (well-bonded tile, vinyl, hardwood) if the substrate is level and sound. Glue-down and nail-down installs require the existing floor to come up. We always inspect the subfloor first and tell you honestly whether install-over saves money or whether tear-out is the right call.

What's the difference between LVP and laminate?

Accepted Answer

Laminate has a printed paper top layer over a fiberboard core — it looks like wood but swells permanently when it gets wet. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) has a printed vinyl top layer over a waterproof PVC or rigid stone-plastic core — it's genuinely waterproof, more dimensionally stable, and far better suited to Upstate kitchens, bathrooms, and any home with pets or kids. We rarely install laminate anymore.

How much waste should I plan for?

Accepted Answer

Plan on 8–12% waste for straight-lay LVP and engineered hardwood, and 12–15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, or large-format tile. We always recommend buying a small attic stash beyond the install need — flooring runs and dye lots change, and having spare planks for a future repair from the exact lot is worth the small extra spend.

Do I need to acclimate my flooring before install?

Accepted Answer

Engineered and solid hardwood: yes, 48–72 hours in the home at normal indoor humidity is required by every manufacturer we install. LVP and tile: typically 24 hours minimum. Skipping acclimation is the most common reason for gapping, cupping, or warranty disputes a year or two after install — we don't skip it.

Can hardwood be refinished?

Accepted Answer

Solid hardwood can typically be sanded and refinished 4–7 times over its life. Engineered hardwood can be refinished once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness (4mm+ wear layers refinish better than 2mm). LVP and laminate cannot be refinished — when they wear out, individual planks or full areas are replaced.

What about the transitions between rooms?

We plan transitions during quoting and bring physical samples of T-molds, reducers, and threshold pieces to the assessment so you can see how the join will look. The cleanest result is one continuous flooring material across the entire main level — that's what most of our flooring jobs scope toward, and we'll walk you through whether your current layout supports it.

Will the install be dusty?

Accepted Answer

Tear-out of carpet and pad is low-dust. Tile demo is the dustiest stage — we tape off plastic dust barriers, run negative-air HEPA filtration when warranted, and protect HVAC returns. Subfloor grinding or self-leveling produces some dust that's contained to the work zone. The site is vacuumed at the end of each day.
