Project Overview

Replaced 1,650 sq ft of mixed carpet, tile, and original 1990s oak strip flooring across the main level of a Mauldin home with 7-inch wide-plank white oak engineered hardwood — installed glue-down over a leveled slab and concrete-suitable subfloor.

The Challenge

The home's main level had four flooring transitions in less than 30 feet: carpet in the family room, dated tile in the foyer and kitchen, 2 1/4-inch oak strip in the dining room, and vinyl in the laundry. Visual breaks at every doorway made the open floor plan feel chopped up, and the original oak strip had cupped from kitchen-side humidity.

Our Solution

We removed all existing flooring, ground down high spots on the slab, and self-leveled the subfloor across the entire main level. The new flooring is 7-inch wide-plank white oak engineered hardwood in a natural matte finish, glue-down installation across the leveled slab for stability in Upstate humidity. New shoe molding wraps every wall, transitions to the carpeted stair were rebuilt with a matching white oak nosing, and the kitchen island toe-kick was re-finished to match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why engineered hardwood instead of solid?

Engineered hardwood is built to handle Upstate SC humidity swings without cupping or gapping the way solid hardwood can — especially over a slab. The top wear layer is real white oak, so it sands and refinishes like solid wood, but the stable core eliminates the seasonal movement problems we see in 25-year-old solid floors here.

How long did the install take?

About a week on-site — two days for tear-out and slab prep, three days for the glue-down install, and a day for trim and cleanup. The flooring acclimated in the home for 72 hours before install, which is required by every engineered manufacturer we work with.

Did you source materials at Floor & Decor?

Yes. We're a longtime partner with Floor & Decor in Greenville and we install material homeowners buy there all the time — typically saving 20–35% versus big-box equivalents. See our Floor & Decor partner page for how that scoping conversation works.
